ABLE CHOICE was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, OUR JET and SILENT WITNESS became unbalanced after bumping as a result of SILENT WITNESS being carried out by PLANET RULER which in turn was carried out by BILLET EXPRESS which shifted out away from NATURAL BLITZ which was also shifting ground. Near the 800 Metres, PLANET RULER was steadied and lost its position when crowded for room between SILENT WITNESS and BILLET EXPRESS which continued to shift out after being cleared by NATURAL BLITZ. Near the 700 Metres, SILENT WITNESS and OUR JET raced tight outside BILLET EXPRESS. Approaching the 400 Metres, PLANET RULER was steadied and shifted to the inside of REGENCY HORSE to obtain clear running. Passing the 400 Metres, SILENT WITNESS got its head on the side, hung in and made contact with BILLET EXPRESS. SILENT WITNESS continued to hang in for the remainder of the race. SCINTILLATION and ABSOLUTE CHAMPION were sent for sampling.

FUSAICHI PEGASUS broke to the inside, saved ground along the backstretch, swung out approaching the quarter pole and edged clear under vigorous hand urging. APTITUDE was with the winner along the backstretch, eased outside FUSAICHI PEGASUS nearing the final sixteenth and finished determinedly but wasn?t good enough. IMPEACHMENT was outrun until the stretch while saving ground, rallied steadily along the inside to finish willingly but unable to threaten the top two. MORE THAN READY moved inside to stalk the dueling leaders from the rail soon after the break, he then slipped through along the rail to gain along even terms for the lead when straightened out in the drive, then failed to sustain the needed momentum. WHEELAWAY worked his way inside on the first turn, came out five wide approaching the stretch, then lugged in badly, bothering CAPTAIN STEVE and forcing that one in and flattened out. CHINA VISIT was unhurried early, then followed the winner seven wide on the second turn while rallying, then, after being bumped slightly about the sixteenth pole when CAPTAIN STEVE drifted out, lacked a further response. CURULE leaned in at the start and bumped HIGH YIELD, raced within striking distance while three wide around the second turn, angled out five wide in the drive but came up empty. CAPTAIN STEVE, within easy striking distance while between horses nearing the end of the backstretch, was put to a drive beginning the second turn, rallied three wide to gain a slight advantage a quarter mile then, after being bothered in the upper stretch, drifted out while tiring. WAR CHANT, unhurried on the backstretch while racing just outside FUSAICHI PEGASUS, was finished after seven furlongs. DEPUTY WARLOCK, outside on the backstretch, came to the extreme outside for the drive and passed tired rivals. TRIPPI went up to alternate for the lead outside HAL?S HOPE, battled on about even terms until the stretch and gave way. EXCHANGE RATE, five or six wide throughout, was finished at the far turn. ANEES swerved in at the start while breaking awkwardly, saved ground but failed to menace. THE DEPUTY (IRE) failed to mount a rally while wide throughout. HIGH YIELD bumped at the start and caught five wide entering the first turn, continued wide and was finished approaching the stretch. HAL?S HOPE dueled inside for a mile and tired. COMMENDABLE was also wide while not a factor. RONTON, off a bit slow, failed to reach contention. GRAEME HALL showed speed for seven furlongs, gave way and was eased.

Racing Incident Report
VIVA PATACA bounded in the air at the start and lost ground and was then taken across behind runners to improve its position on the fence. HELLO PRETTY began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. On jumping, MUSICAL WAY was crowded for room between VENGEANCE OF RAIN and ADMIRE MOON, both of which shifted ground. ADMIRE MOON also became unbalanced. Approaching the first turn, MUSICAL WAY was steadied when awkwardly placed between VENGEANCE OF RAIN and SATWA QUEEN. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, VENGEANCE OF RAIN got its head on the side, commenced to lay in and was steadied away from the heels of HELLO PRETTY. At the 700 Metres, ART TRADER was steadied away from the heels of VIVA PATACA. Near the 600 Metres, MUSICAL WAY was checked when crowded for room between SATWA QUEEN and VIVA PATACA (C Soumillon) which at this time shifted to the outside of GROWL which was commencing to give ground. ADMIRE MOON, which was following MUSICAL WAY, was steadied in consequence. In the circumstances, C Soumillon was severely reprimanded. R Thomas (MUSICAL WAY) reported in this incident he momentarily lost the use of his left stirrup. In the early part of the Straight, ADMIRE MOON was held up and unable to obtain clear running between ALEXANDER GOLDRUN and PRIDE. Throughout the race, ALEXANDER GOLDRUN travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the performance of HELLO PRETTY, B Prebble said his mount travelled satisfactorily until after the 700 Metres. He said at that time VENGEANCE OF RAIN improved on his outside and made contact with HELLO PRETTY on several occasions. He said when this occurred, HELLO PRETTY appeared to lose concentration and did not travel as comfortably as it had been. He said in the Straight HELLO PRETTY did not close the race off in the manner in which it had at its most recent start. HELLO PRETTY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of HELLO PRETTY after the race did not show any significant findings. PRIDE and ADMIRE MOON were sent for sampling.

Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup - Quotes

10 December 2006

1st Christophe Lemaire, jockey Pride:

"When it came to the last corner I was behind Alexander Goldrun. She helped me in to the race but unfortunately we had to come a little bit early. She has a great turn of foot, but her run is quite short so she was stopping a bit for me at the end and I was frightened we might get caught. She has that very special fighting spirit that got her home."

1st Alain de Royer-Dupre, trainer Pride:

"She is a marvellous filly with a brilliant turn of foot. Today is a special story in a long career. We have a new system of keeping three great fillies going and today all three are retiring. As for me, I will have to find another one.

1st Sven Hanson, owner of Pride:

"It was a great win today, but that is definitely the end of her career. Enough is enough. I don't want to take any more risks."

2nd Yutaka Take, jockey Admire Moon

"I had him settled well. He didn't jump from the gates too smoothly so I had him at the back and he quickened very well in the stretch. It was a great run but I'm very sorry to finish so close. He's still only a three-year-old colt so he is something to look forward to for the future."

3rd Anthony Delpech, jockey Vengeance Of Rain

"I had to come out at the 1000 metres mark because another horse was coming back on me. Anyway he's run his heart out today but the other two were just too strong."

4th Christophe Soumillon (Viva Pataca)

"I was happy with his run today and he's on the way back and has stepped up from his last two runs."

5th Art Trader, jockey Eric Saint-Martin

"I had a nice run on the fence and he didn't do too badly for a horse nobody liked."

6th Frankie Dettori (Satwa Queen)

"She's a run a great race. She was really going forward turning for home and I was very happy with her effort but just not good enough today. A good effort after the long season's she's had."

7th Katsuhiko Sumii (Dia De La Novia)

"She's still green, she needs to be more grown up mentally."

8th Brett Prebble (Hello Pretty)

"To be honest I'm just not sure what to make of the run. Guess it's back to the drawing board with him."

9th Jim Bolger, trainer Alexander Goldrun

"There were no excuses really. I was perfectly happy until turning in to the straight. It's the end of a great era.... she owes us nothing. She's now retired and is one of three great fillies to have retired today."

10th Ronan Thomas (Musical Way)

"She had a good run but could not improve in the straight."

11th Craig Williams (Growl)

"He ran well. We got some cheap sectionals up front but they attacked a long way from home. He had his spring in Melbourne and some of the others might have been a bit fresher. He'll win some races here in Hong Kong, though."

Racing Incident Report
In accordance with usual practice, after TAKEOVER TARGET arrived in Hong Kong, samples were taken from the horse. Upon analysis, the Racing Laboratory advised that this sample contained 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone hexanoate. Mr J Janiak, the trainer and managing part-owner of the horse, was advised of this finding. Further blood samples were taken from TAKEOVER TARGET on 14 November 2006, 29 November 2006, 5 December 2006 and 8 December 2006. On each occasion, Dr T S M Wan, Head of Racing Laboratory, advised the Stewards these samples upon analysis showed the presence of 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone hexanoate. On each occasion, Mr Janiak was informed of the finding. A further blood sample was taken from TAKEOVER TARGET this morning 10 December 2006 and presented to the Racing Laboratory at about 7:30 am. Dr Wan advised the Stewards at about noon that this sample also contained 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone hexanoate. Dr K L Watkins, Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison advised the Stewards that 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone hexanoate is a prohibited substance in accordance with the Rules of Racing of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Mr Janiak was advised of the analyst's finding and informed by the Stewards that in accordance with Rule 12(13) the horse would be withdrawn. Accordingly TAKEOVER TARGET was withdrawn from this race at 12:25 pm. An inquiry into the analyst's findings is now adjourned to a date to be fixed. When the gates opened, MEISHO BOWLER was slow to begin, then refused to stride out and as such took no part in the race. Mr T Shirai, trainer of MEISHO BOWLER, was told before the horse will be permitted to race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in a starting gate test. Shortly after the start, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION was crowded for room inside SCINTILLATION which in the early stages hung in. Passing the 200 Metres, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION hung in. When questioned, O Doleuze (DOWN TOWN) said it had again today been decided to take DOWN TOWN back from the start due to a wide barrier. He said at its last start down the Straight over 1000 Metres, the horse closed the race off strongly and it was therefore felt appropriate to adopt the same tactics today. He did say should DOWN TOWN draw a more favourable barrier, the intention would be to have the horse ridden more prominently. SUNNY SING, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION and SILENT WITNESS were sent for sampling.

Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint - quotes

10 December 2006

David Hall, trainer, Absolute Champion, winner:

"It would have been pretty hard to say that he could have improved after his last run when he broke the track record, but somehow he's done it. I was very disappointed that he was not selected for the race in the first place - I thought there were no ifs and buts about breaking a track record but he's more than proved that now. That's one of the most impressive wins that I've seen for a long time and it's sweet when it's your own. I know that he had a bit of a reputation before he came to my stable but maybe he just enjoyed the switch. Adding the side-winkers has probably had an effect as well."

Brett Prebble, jockey, Absolute Champion, winner:

"That was some performance. It was amazing. To win a race like this by over four lengths - wow!"

Felix Coetzee - Silent Witness - 2nd - "He's run a great race, but he's found one too good. The winner was a firecracker today."

Jamie Spencer: Benbaun - 3rd. -  "Very pleased with his run, they went very fast early, and I was further back than I wanted to be, but turning into the straight I thought he would get into the three."

Mark Wallace: "I am absolutely thrilled to have a horse that has become the first from the Europe to finish in the frame in this race. He deserves to win a really big one - he has only won two Group Three races back home. There is every chance we shall try and do this again."

Olivier Doleuze - Down Town - 4th

"He had a bad gate, and it wasn't his best race today."

Christophe Soumillon - Sunny Sing - 5th

"I don't know. I don't know the horse."

Douglas Whyte, jockey, Billet Express 6th

"He just didn't get into it at any stage."

Manoel Nunes, jockey, Able Prince 7th

"He didn't really want to go on with it at the top of the straight. He's better at 1000m."

Gerald Mosse - Scintillation - 8th

"The pace was plenty fast enough but he showed some good acceleration. Then he seemed to get distracted by something, but believe me he is still a very good horse."

Hugh Bowman, jockey, Red Oog - 9th

"Being drawn out so wide I had to go back on him a bit further than I would have liked and I think the ground was a bit firm for him anyway."

Kenichi Ikezoe, jockey, She Is Tosho - 10th

"We just could not keep up with the others.  She did not show her race today."

A Delpech, jockey, Natural Blitz - 11th

"I had the other horse (Desert Lord) at my girth and that did not help. In any case this is not really his trip."

Neil Callan, jockey, Desert Lord - 12th

"The idea was to take a sit but he wouldn't come back to me and I had two hands on one rein just trying to get him around the bend. Couldn't anchor him."

Yuichi Fukunaga - Meisho Bowler - Took No Part

"He just stopped. This is the same thing that he sometimes did in the track works."

Jockey Stephane Pasquier hugs Rail Link after the race. He said, "It is important for me to thank the Prince and Andr?Fabre for their confidence. Only one month ago in Deauville, I was on the sidelines because of my hand but above all I was depressed. And today, I've won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Rail Link! It was rather like David against Goliath. Now I'm pleased to have taken two months' rest! I am sorry for the Japanese but I hope that they'll come back."

Rail Link parades for the fans after the race. Winning jockey Stephane Pasquier said, "Andr?Fabre didn't give me any orders. He told me to ride the horse as I found him and to try and get the best possible trip. I took a position just behind Deep Impact and did not feel any pressure as I was riding an outsider. When I extracted my horse from behind Deep Impact he burst into action. I only realized that I had won when we passed the post but I still haven't grasped what this win really represents. I'll really appreciate it when I have the time to relax."

The trophy presentation with trainer Andre Fabre second from the left. Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager of winning owner and breeder Khalid Abdullah (Juddmonte Farms) said "He has probably done enough for this year and it is very unlikely that he will run again. The Breeders' Cup is possible but very unlikely. I was very hopeful beforehand but when one has a runner in the Arc de Triomphe one cannot be sure of winning, especially as Rail Link is backward and he had an unusual beginning to his racing career, as his jockey fell off. This is a great success for Juddmonte as we have his sire Dansili and above all two generations on his dam's side."

Second place finisher Pride warms up before the race. Her owner Sven Hanson said, "I'm thrilled and disappointed at the same time, and also very proud of Pride. She retires at the end of the season but we'll see how she comes out of this race before she runs again, which could be in Hong Kong or in Japan." Jockey Christophe Lemaire added, "I am sorry that the ground was not softer as that would have been an advantage for her. She's a mare who has to wait near the rear. I would have preferred to stay behind Rail Link in the back straight but I had to take a pull as Sixties Icon was on my outside pushing me in. She showed a long acceleration and kept going, not losing out by far."

Third place finisher and beaten favorite Deep Impact returns after the race. His jockey Yutaka Take said, "He was tense in the first part of the race and was pulling. That is the reason why he did not show his usual acceleration. In Japan, races are run at a much faster pace and he is not used to this style of racing."

Fourth place finisher Hurricane Run takes off after the post parade. His jockey Kieren Fallon said, "We were beaten by the ground, not by anything else. It is nothing to do with the incident a furlong out, that changed nothing. The horse did not pull but didn't relax. He needed a stronger pace."

Last place finisher and another of the favorites Shirocco in the post parade. His jockey Christophe Soumillon said, "I can't explain the reason why he was less reactive than usual when accelerating. At the entrance to the straight I already felt that he would have trouble accelerating and in effect he soon weakened. He remains a great horse and I hope he will show that before the end of the year."
